Converting data from GPS units

GPS units can also be used capture data in the field - waypoints and tracklogs in particular - and then convert these into digital formats for use in GIS and mapping software. Some tools that may assist are listed below.

  • DNR Garmin Extension for ArcView - a very useful extension for uploading/downloading data from Garmin GPS units and producing shapefiles of the information collected in the field. (Windows)
  • gpx2shp - gpx2shp converts the GPS Exchange Format (GPX) to ESRI shapefile format (shp). (Multiple platforms, open source)
