Paperless geocaching - Pocket Queries

Getting your Pocket Queries

Firstly, you need to be a Premium Member of Geocaching.com

You build Pocket Queries from your Pocket Query page you can get there via the My Account link on the left Bar at Geocaching.com, and then the Build Pocket Queries link on the right bar.

There's a limit of 500 caches per Pocket Query, so I set it up with my bookmarks (its easy now they have increased it to 500 caches per bookmark) I have it split by caches I want to find in each area. Give it the pocket query a descriptive name (e.g. "The name of the bookmark" works for me). Go to your | bookmark list page (found on the My Account page) and click on the Create Pocket Query link for the bookmark you want. Untick the ebook option and choose zipped if you want to reduce the size of the email. The days of the week to get the file sent to you is up to you. Just remember the states is a day behind us for most of the day so if you want it to arrive straight away click on yesterdays day (so if its Monday click on Sunday).

The Dateline Bug

There's a bug in the Geocaching.com Pocket Query generator - if you are searching for caches by distance from a point, and that 'circle' crosses the 180 line - you will get no caches at all in your Query. Reduce your search distance, or move your reference point to the East. This is particularly annoying and relevant to us here in New Zealand.

Tips and Tricks

It's a good idea for your first go at getting a GPX file to not generate it on any days, until you have got it working the way you want in the preview. If you get rubbish on your first go ( i.e. no caches at all ) that is what it will send you, and you won't be able to get a real list until the next day.
