The society was initially formed in direct response to a desire by the Department of Conservation to form a relationship with geocachers in New Zealand to discuss geocaching on crown-managed land. Whilst it was not the only reason to form the society, it was the main one.
Recognising that the society should have a wider focus than just geocaching, the focus for the society was decided to be the recreational use of the Global Positioning System in New Zealand.
The society therefore has strong roots in geocaching in New Zealand, but is attracting many people with broader interests in the recreational use of the GPS in New Zealand.
The society was registered as an Incorporated Society on 23 June 2003. The formal name of the Society is the NZ Recreational GPS Society Incorporated. The registration number with the Companies Office is 1337581.
This followed a meeting in Christchurch by interested parties to finalise aspects of the registration such as the society constitution. This was the culmination of 2-3 months work by a number of people.
Donations are being solicited by the Society towards purchasing one or more GPS units to be sent to Sri Lanka to help with the recovery effort following the Boxing Day earthquake and resulting tsunami.
More details can be found in this thread in the forums.
As there has only been one nomination per position it is moved that the nominees be elected as below:
Welcome to the end of the first year of the NZ Recreational GPS USers Society - the society has grown from the humble beginnings of a few people siting in a living room in Christchurch talking about how good it would be to have a unified voice for GPS users in NZ to an online community of people covering not only NZ but also scattered throughout the world. The society started with a electronic forum where we could discuss the things that interest us but at long last, on 17th of April the website to accompany the forum went live, and since then has grown due to the contribution of articles from many people. In the process of getting the website up we changed web service providers and thanks to everything for bearing with us while the forums were down for a couple of day during the changeover.
Hi to all Society Members,
