Waiora Scout Camp

There are various onsite accommodation options at the Waiora Scout Camp:

  1. Unpowered campervan & tent sites. NZD15/night per site.
Tent sites accommodate up to one medium sized tent & one vehicle. If weather or ground conditions are wet, vehicle movement & parking will be restricted in the tent areas. Unfortunately Waiora does not have powered sites available.
  2. Backpacker-style bunk rooms with six single bunks. NZD20/night per person.
These are immediately adjoining one of the main halls. If you would like to share with other people, please let us know at the time you are registering accommodation who they are, but we cannot guarantee we will be able to be arranged. Note that as these are directly off one of the main halls, they will be busier and possibly noiser at some times of the day and evening.
  3. Family cabins with two, 4 bunk bedrooms. NZD70/night per 4 bunks, NZD140/night per 8 bunks.
These are further away from the main activities so quieter, but nearer to the main office, which will be staffed overnight for first aid & security. These also have a small kitchen/dining area. There are a very limited number of these cabins.
  4. Special needs. NZD15/night per site.
There will be 2-4 campervan parking spots available near the accessible facilities and main food hall for those attendees who hold a New Zealand mobility parking permit equivalent, or have arranged with the organisers based on special needs, or mobility issues.

All toilet and shower facilities are shared.

Onsite Bookings

Bookings for accommodation are now open using the Accommodation Request form. Accommodation is available at Waiora Scout Camp, the site of NZ MEGA 2012, only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Both Mosgiel and Dunedin have the usual range of motel and hotel type accommodation available.

If you hold an orange New Zealand Disability permit or overseas equivalent and require accessible parking for your camper van you MUST indicate this on the booking form. There are four of these sites available which will be allocated on a first in first served basis to permit holders.

Unpowered Sites - NZD15 per night

There will be many sites available on location for tents and campervans. Please note that all sites are unpowered - if you must have power, you should look at staying at a commercial campground. There are a number of camping grounds available nearby in Mosgiel or 15-20 minutes away in Dunedin.

Backpacker-style Bunk Rooms - NZD20 per person per night

There are 36 bunks available in backpacker-style rooms. Backpacker bunks & sites will be allocated on a first in first served basis. Bunks & sites must be paid for at time of booking to secure your booking.

Cabins - BY APPLICATION ONLY - NZD70 per 4 people per night

There are a very limited number of cabins accommodating 4 or 8 people - two ends with 4 bunks each and a shared living area. Family cabins will be allocated to those with most need. For example, family groups travelling internationally will be given priority. NZ MEGA 2012 organisers will not invoice you for the cabins until we have confirmed your application.

The sites and bunkrooms will be allocated on a first-in, first-served basis. Those people who have paid registration and accommodation fees in full will be allocated accommodation in these areas first.

Due to the limited number of family cabins, these will be allocated by the organising committee on an as-needed basis. Overseas families travelling with children will be given first priority. Groups wanting to be allocated a family cabin will need to apply. Soon after the close-off date for applications you will be advised if you have been allocated a family cabin. This allocation will only be confirmed on full payment of registration & accommodation fees. Failure to pay in full will mean that any people on the waiting list will be offered the cabins or your booking will revert to bunkroom accommodation (if bunks are still available).

Off Site Accommodation

There is a wide range of off site accommodation available for NZ MEGA 2012 attendees within 30 minutes drive of Waiora - including hotels, motels, backpackers, bed & breakfasts, and farmstays. To get you started, you may want to search via Zenbu (Accommodation in Dunedin, Accommodation in Mosgiel) . We recommend Zenbu, as it is an open source database, and it is also the points-of-interest database that you will have in your GPS if you use the NZ Open GPS Maps for your Garmin. If you create an account on Zenbu, you can also submit corrections, as well as export search results as GPX.

Please note that the Society is making this available for your information, and by listing accommodation here, we are not recommending it - just making it easier for you to find. This is done under our best efforts, but there may be errors. We'll endeavor to update and correct if this is the case.

GPX File

For your convenience, we are starting to maintain a GPX file that has relevant points-of-interest that you can download and use in programs like Garmin MapSource, BaseCamp and RoadTrip to help you with your planning. Note that at this stage, it contains mostly outlying accommodation, including Mosgiel, but does not include the significant amount of accommodation within Dunedin itself. It is recommended you also visit the Zenbu search for Dunedin accommodation to see the wide range of options.

Download the Accommodation GPX here (dated 2011-11-01). Note that it will probably be easiest to right-click on this link and select 'Save As'.
