A few pointers on how Scott uses his GPS while 4WD'ing

  • I simply know the tracks, but I use the GPS to work out the best and safest way of getting there by making a route on Topomap on my laptop, I then download it to my GPS. It makes for a much easier way of navigating.
  • If I need to change the plan during a trip because of adverse
weather conditions or participant comfort I can simply alter the route.
  • I also keep the track on, set at every 200m, and at the end of the tour I provide those participants with a copy of the map to show exactly where the went. Included on the map are links (GPS points) I have provided along the trip at these GPS points I have loaded an image that relates to the points.
  • For safety reasons also (and needed to use it a medical emergency) it is an essential piece of safety equipment. To find your way out, helicopter rescues etc. I consider it as Lifesaving equipment like my first aid kit and radios, because it can save lives!!
  • I like to do enduro navigation with GPS units as well, where I set a route with nothing much than GPS waypoints, it is up to them to find there way out! Of course there is some instructions to go with it.

Note that Scott is a professional 4WD operator - a GPS cannot get your 4WD out if it is stuck in a swamp, ensure you carry all appropriate 4WD rescue equipment and tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back - Editor
